As promised, we are continuing on from the last post to chat about what we feel is the often-overlooked; Moodle Workplace.
It’s such a powerful tool, building on the strengths of Moodle Core but specifically designed to meet the training needs of organisations, though we might be a little biased!
This time, we want to focus on one of our favourite features: Multi-tenancy.
It’s a total game-changer for any organisation that needs to manage multiple audiences or divisions, all under one platform.
What is Multi-tenancy?
Long story short, Multi-tenancy means you can have multiple “sites” (tenancies) within one main site, known as the main tenant. The ‘Super Admin’ has overall control but can pass on the main responsibilities to ‘Tenant Admins.’
And here’s the cool part: each tenant can have its own unique login page, branding, logo and user base—all completely separate from the others, virtually walled off if you will.
What makes it even better is how Moodle Workplace handles data and configuration. Each client organisation works in a customised virtual application instance, keeping everything separate and secure. Multi-tenancy lets you set up tenants with their own themes, permissions and branding, so users in one tenant never see or interact with users from another.
Each tenant can have its own:
- Users, roles, hierarchies
- Dynamic rules (we will cover in another post)
- Permissions
- Themes, branding
- Reports, analytics
- Separate departments within their own structures
- Learning entities like courses, programs and certifications
Why Multi-tenancy is such a win
Just some examples:
- Multinationals: Separate tenants for each region / office with localised branding and content.
- Franchises: Custom training and branding for each franchise, managed independently.
- Partnership Networks: Tailored access for partner organisations – keep departments separate while staying on one platform.
- Government Agencies: Isolated tenants for departments or regional offices to maintain data compliance.
- Healthcare Organisations: Training for different facilities or departments, securely separated.
- Training companies: Handle multiple customers through separate tenants.
By assigning Tenant Admins, you as the Super Admin can take a step back and let others handle their own users and courses. It’s a great way to reduce your workload without losing overall control.
