Momentum Support (MS) is one of the largest privately-owned contract Cleaning and Security companies. Established in 1982, their head office is based in Dublin, with regional offices in Belfast, Galway, Cork and London. Currently, MS has approx. 3,000 employees working across the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and London.
The aim of introducing a learning management system in Momentum Support(MS) was to enable the L&D team to successfully deliver training across a large geographically spread workforce throughout Ireland. In addition to this, the L&D team also faced challenges to provide just in time learning and mandatory training as employees had varied working hours across different contracts and departments, and travel to and from a training location was both timely and costly.COVID-19 made the requirements for a learning management system fundamental to ensure that compulsory training was delivered to all relevant employees, as employee well-being was a priority. Sinead Woods, L&D Manager in Momentum Support, was keen to find a solution which would enable her to roll out compulsory training during COVID but to also support MS in growing their training agenda.
The four biggest employee model factors which made training ‘just in time’ difficult
All four factors created a planning and delivery challenge for training. These issues meant that managers and employees would be expected to travel to the Head office or regional offices to receive mandatory training. Such time away from day to day business would have impacted contract delivery, as removing the employee from the site results in a delay of the work being done, which affects both customer and client satisfaction. MS needed a solution that would fit with the company’s future vision, which was also cost-effective and had functionality to deliver and track engaging content provided via desktop and Mobile, to their employees at the right time.
Moodle Workplace has allowed training to become more accessible to all employees. Sinead Woods, Learning and Development Manager at Momentum Support told us:
“The system does everything we need it to do –the system can issue reminder emails when refresher training needs to be completed, training certificates can be generated by the employees, reports can be pulled from the system very quickly and managers can have access to their own sites/employees. The system was customised to include our company logo and brand colours, something that was important to us”
Following an analysis into the cost per head for the (existing) standard training received by all employees, including the employees hourly rate, travel expenses and the trainers hourly rate, it was clear that compared with the cost of delivering the same training via Moodle Workplace, the costs savings were significant.
In addition to cost consideration, sourcing engaging content was something to consider.
As partners of Go1 we offered momentum Support a freemium package of interactive online courses to support Momentum in building their content library to provide further learning resources for their employees.As Momentum Support were in the early stages of developing their course content, this was a great opportunity for us to help them kick-off with interactive modules that they can share with all employees. The freemium package included Health and Safety Awareness, IT Security Awareness and Dignity in the Workplace all created by established content providers.

Moodle Workplace was implemented in June 2020. Due to the covid-19 restrictions, MS found it difficult to complete the necessary training, such as Return to Work Induction.Thanks to Moodle Workplace, they have now moved this training online and assigned all employees to complete this training.This has ensured that all employees returning to work following Covid-19 are safe and know what to do in the event of falling ill at work with symptoms.
Although the system is still new within the organisation, MS is already seeing results.

Prior to Moodle Workplace, trying to find who had/hadn’t done training was very much so a paper-based exercise and extremely time consuming. How was this system implemented so successfully?
As this was a big shift in how the organisation delivered training we made sure that key training and regular consultations were provided for the management team to ensure that they got the support that they needed to get fully accustomed to Moodle Workplace.
