Moodle 3 has been a tremendous success. Unleashed all the way back in 2015, it’s seen 11 releases, growing Moodle’s user base to over 300 million people worldwide; so at that scale, a new version of Moodle is a really big deal.
Moodle 4.0 marks the beginning of an exciting new generation of Moodle. It will be the foundation of years of advances for the world’s leading open-source LMS, as well as rolling out to move Moodle Workplace and MoodleCloud forward.
Improved User Experience
The Moodle 4.0 release is packed with new features but has one clear focus – to improve and modernise the user experience, for both course creators and learners. Moodle 4 brings an emphasis on a cleaner UI, reduced clutter and easier navigation.
The UI changes don’t just make Moodle look nicer – they’re designed to reduce cognitive load and bring quick, consistent navigation across platforms and mobile devices, as well as offering crucial accessibility improvements. From the collapsible course outline to the tabbed interface and data-driven dashboard, everything in Moodle 4.0 is streamlined.
Style and Substance
Alongside the obvious user experience changes, Moodle 4.0 is also full of productivity enhancements. Now featuring the Report Builder tools beloved of Moodle Workplace users, it’s never been easier to get reports on how your Moodle is being used.
Moodle’s ever-popular assessment tools have also been overhauled. Assignments can now have a timer and minimum grade requirement, while the question bank gains powerful version control features at a question level.
Moodle 4.0 also brings the popular BigBlueButton integration into the core feature set. Adding powerful video integration for your remote learners has never been easier.
And last but not least, for now, there’s a brand new Moodle 4 official mobile app to accompany Moodle 4.
