For organisations with a policy of deploying only Moodle LTS releases, there’s a substantial number of changes and new features compared to those who upgrade with each major release. With the launch of Moodle 4.5, those upgrading from 4.1 will see the following key developments:
Artificial Intelligence
- AI Subsystem – The AI subsystem is the foundation for future AI- powered tools. This subsystem places an emphasis on security, privacy, and transparency, ensuring AI tools respect user privacy. As AI integration grows, this subsystem will cater for the secure deployment of AI-driven learning tools across the platform.
- AI Content Generation & Summarization – Teachers have the ability to use AI to generate text and images for their courses, significantly speeding up content creation. Students can benefit from AI-powered summaries, which help them quickly review large chunks of course content. All AI-generated content is clearly labelled to maintain transparency.
Course Management
- Gradebook Improvements: Teachers can now bulk insert and edit grades, making management simpler.
- Activity Completion: Teachers can now set activity completion rules based on conditions like grades, which wasn’t as flexible before.
- Course Page Enhancements: Introduction of drag-and-drop functionality for activities and sections, simplifying course management.
- Assignment: The ability to bulk download assignment submissions and better grading workflows.
- Subsections: make it easier for instructors to organise their course materials. This feature allows teachers to segment related content into expandable sections, helping students to focus on the relevant material without getting overwhelmed.
- Badge Improvements: Teachers can now easily create, assign, and distribute badges to reward student progress. This is especially useful for gamified learning and competency-based courses.
- Native Content Editor Media & Recording: Working with multimedia is much more efficient. Teachers can record and embed audio and video directly within the TinyMCE content editor, reducing the time spent on external tools.
There are numerous other smaller features included in the 4.1 to 4.5 jump including accessibility improvements, notification refinements, performance enhancements, security updates – consult your Enovation Account manager if you have any additional questions.
